Representatives of several leading football clubs met in 1863 to try to devise a common set of rules for football. During the 14th and 15th centuries ce (Shrove Tuesday football matches became annual traditions in local communities), and many of these games continued well into the 19th century. (For more on the development of football sports, see football.) In Britain, football games may have been played as early as the time of Roman occupation in the 1st century bce. Rugby union allows for indefinite possession, whereas rugby league limits possession to six tackles. Rugby union is played with 15 players per team, while rugby league has 13.<\/p>\n

The 15 players on the field are divided into eight forwards , two more than in rugby league, and seven backs. 1883 is also the year of the first rugby sevens tournament (the Melrose Sevens), which is still held annually. Although the rules of the game were not a factor in the split, the breakaway teams subsequently adopted some rule changes and this became the separate code of “rugby league”.<\/p>\n
